THE FOUNDATION STAGE (RECEPTION)

The early formative years of children’s development are crucial to provide the scaffold upon which children’s emotional, personal, social, physical and academic progress is based.

At South Norwood Primary School, we offer an environment underpinned by the Areas of Learning which are defined as the core of the Foundation Stage curriculum. We foster a love of books and promote creativity in all learning, encouraging independence as a key life skill.

There are six ‘Areas of Learning’: Personal, Social & Emotional Development; Communication, Language & Literacy; Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy; Knowledge & Understanding of the World; Physical Development and Creative Development.

Children’s progress in these Areas is very carefully monitored against ‘Stepping Stones’, leading to ‘Early Learning Goals’ which further assess development and the acquisition of knowledge, skills and understanding.

KEY STAGES 1 AND 2 (YEARS 1-6)

At the start of September 2008, South Norwood Primary School is revising its curriculum, based on the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). This is an exciting skills-based curriculum that links subjects purposefully and progressively together through exciting and stimulating themes that have a positive appeal to children.

The teachers are very excited about the introduction of the IPC as it builds further upon the changes that we were already making to offer a more cross-curricular and engaging curriculum. The IPC has received much praise from Ofsted Inspectors in other schools where they have recognised the impact on children’s significantly improved attitudes to their learning.

At South Norwood Primary School, each year group will focus on a different theme each half-term. Literacy and Numeracy will continue to be taught through the Revised Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks and in order to improve standards in Science, the Science QCA Units that we currently teach will also be included within the timetable.

The following tables show the Themes covered by each year group throughout the year. Many exciting trips linked to the Themes have already taken place to optimise the children’s knowledge and understanding with the Theme at the heart of the learning focus. Many more stimulating trips have been planned for the rest of the year.
